Did you know compassion fatigue is a real thing?
As estheticians, our work revolves around helping others, and there is most definitely a transfer of energy. We listen to clients’ concerns, provide solutions to their skin challenges, and often serve as a confidant.
While the connections we build are meaningful, rewarding, and necessary to building a successful business, this constant emotional giving can lead to compassion fatigue—a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged exposure to others’ stress and needs. Does this sound familiar to the moms reading this?
One of the first steps in avoiding compassion fatigue is establishing healthy boundaries. While it’s natural to hustle in the beginning (and some hustle is required), and we want to be there for our clients, remember that our role is to provide a professional service, not to absorb their emotions or take on their personal struggles. Setting limits on how much you allow yourself to emotionally invest in each client interaction can protect our energy. Additionally, defining clear boundaries in your schedule—such as setting specific hours for client communication and ensuring we take regular breaks during the day—can help prevent burnout.
Self-care is another critical tool for combating compassion fatigue. As someone who promotes self-care to clients, it’s vital to practice what we preach. Prioritize activities that rejuvenate and inspire.
